It is understood that some of this information includes online chatter within the Chinese community that suggests the victim may be an overseas student who was reported missing at the weekend.
News.com.au has chosen not to name the Sydney-based student or publish her photograph.
The student in question was said to have been last seen at Myer department store “in the city” last Friday although it is unclear whether the reference is to the retail giant’s Sydney store or another outlet.

At least one user on the social media message app WeChat claimed a couple who believed the woman to be their missing daughter had contacted police.
